Students interested in applying for the scholarship should do so through their school office and should express, in a 3 page essay, how they exemplify each of the points listed in the scholarship criteria-see attached form. The essay should be in a 12 font, (double-spaced and no more than one-page single-sided per each of the three criteria). A total of three pages should be submitted.

On a separate page (cover page), please type school name, your name, address, e-mail address and telephone number.  Staple this to the essay page. Student’s name and school’s name should not appear anywhere in your essay, except on the cover page. This procedure is used to keep the judges from knowing who submitted the essays making the process anonymous and fair.

A committee of the Hispanic American Foundation members will select TWO award recipients from the group of candidates. Only four candidates may be submitted by each high school. Essays and contact information should be sent to the Hispanic American Foundation, 2210 S. Main St., Tulsa, OK 74114.

The candidates selected will be notified directly by the Hispanic American Foundation office, using contact information provided with the application. The winning students’ schools will be notified as well.

When the HAF office receives notification that the scholarship winners have been accepted and have enrolled in a college, university, vocational or technical
school, a check in the amount of $3,000.00 will be issued to each winner’s
school, on behalf of that scholarship winner.

School offices must forward their application and criteria selection(s) to the Hispanic American Foundation by Thursday, April 20, 2017.  Final selection will be made, and the winners notified in April. Wendy’s Dave Thomas Legacy Award Criteria

1. “Do the Right Thing” – This legacy theme grew from Dave Thomas’ passion to live his life with honesty and integrity. He would often say, “Honesty isn’t just a suggestion.” Dave believed that you earn your reputation by the things you do every day. He thought people should be true to their word.

2. “Treat People with Respect” – Dave loved the restaurant business because he loved being around people. Dave treated everyone with respect. He looked each person he met squarely in the eye and listened intently while people talked to him. Dave lived by the golden rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated, but he said it a simpler way: JUST BE NICE!

3. “Giving Back” – Dave believed that with success came an obligation to share it. He encouraged the Wendy’s family to support the communities that support Wendy’s. He would say, “the more you help others, the more you really help yourself.” Dave was a proponent of sharing yourself as well as monetary resources. Be the best role model you can be – someone is always watching.
Summary: The Wendy’s Dave Thomas Legacy Award recipient should display personal characteristics of each of the criteria listed above. The key attributes are honesty, integrity, respect for peers and adults, and a desire to give back to the community and help others.
The essay should be in 12 font, double-spaced and no more than one page single-sided per each of the three listed Criteria.
